Your first 48 hours in Hong Kong: landing rhythm & checklist

2026-10

Hours 0–3: land and reach town

After immigration, get an Octopus (or confirm phone pay), then choose Airport Express (with free shuttle buses to many hotel zones) or an A-route bus. If your room is not ready, drop bags and head out light.

Hours 3–8: gentle landing

Do not stack museums on night one. A TST promenade, Central Star Ferry pier or Causeway Bay stroll plus cha chaan teng / dim sum beats rushing sights while jet-lagged. Download offline maps and the MTR app; note your hotel’s nearest exit.

Day 2 morning: pick one side

Island line: Central → Tai Kwun / Mid-Levels escalator → the Peak (sunset is nicer). Kowloon line: TST museums and harbour → Nathan Road → Mong Kok markets. Cramming both in one day is exhausting — choose a main spine.

Day 2 evening: keep slack

Check the forecast — summer storms are common. Rain days suit malls, indoor museums or tea houses. Nights can mean Temple Street / Ladies’ Market or Lan Kwai Fong, paced to your energy.

Hold off on cross-boundary

Spend the first 48 hours inside Hong Kong learning the rhythm. Save Macau or Shenzhen for mid-trip and confirm passport/visa plus checkpoint hours first (see Day trips). Visa rules: always ImmD.
